I discovered Abel Azcona thanks to his work on Anonymous Vaginas : 10.000 photos of vaginas, 10.000 identities. Today, I have stumbled upon the work of this Spanish artist again, with Voyeur.
Abel Azcona + 20 men + 10 photographers.
I like Abel’s work because I feel that he uses art and his body to set up projects and find out more about himself. He does video, sculpture, photography… With Voyeur, he explains that he was abandoned by his mother after she gave birth and was later abused during his childhood. He now has trouble forming connections with people, may they be emotional or sexual.
He decided to have lots of gay sex with no less than 20 strangers – not all at once – and to have different photographers grasp the moment and express it in their own style, from a voyeur angle.
This project is not an excuse to get laid, it’s a personal enterprise that takes courage and that aims at trying to bond with people. He explains that sex with men was never really about pleasure for him, but about getting to know himself better.
The result is a series of beautiful photographs which, if you look closely, can sometimes express all that is not shown or said, like pain, pleasure and loneliness.
The photographers involved include names that are well-known in the homoeroticism world : Mano Martínez, Eduardo Vega-Patiño, Cain Q., Josep Rodríguez Oller, Jordi Chicletol, Juanma Carrillo, Fernando Bayona, Jean Baptiste Huong, Rafael Gavalle and David Trullo.
The twenty men who participated in the project by sleeping with Abel are all, somehow, involved in the world of sex and erotica, from prostitutes to actors and artists. If you speak Spanish, you can read about each sexual encounter on his site.
In the meantime, here are a few photographs from the project.
