Men don’t like to dance. Men stay in the corner at a club. Men don’t want to move their hips. LIES! Some men don’t like to dance, and others love it! It’s not effeminate or anything, it’s just having fun! And we don’t see that enough on the media. That’s why I absolutely love these two videos showing men dancing and being sexy and confident as hell.
Gender swap by Mod Carousel
The first has become a huge success by now. I’m talking about Mod Carousel‘s remake of Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines. If you’ve read some of my other articles, like the one about nudity-filled music videos, you know that I think the original Blurred Lines video, featuring two dressed guys surrounded by naked girls dancing and looking dumb, got ridiculously famous. And for what? Showing girls as decorative pieces and saying “I know you want it”, as if all women were desperate for men, and implying that no, sometimes means yes.
One thing you should know about me, is that my motto could be: Vice Versa. I think sexual objectification is ok IF it goes both ways. Being a sexual object is part of sex and attraction. The problem is, that in our current society and media, only women are seen as sex objects, there is only one perspective, but sex is a two-way street! One of the effects is that it denies their own sexuality. I like when men want my body, and I want theirs too. It also puts pressure on men, making them think they have to be big, strong and rough to be a “real man”. Well, maybe those with a penis…
What Mod Carousel did was swap the genders, so that people could see how women are pictured, every day, in the media. It also shows that men can be dancing, sexy and glamour, without necessarily being tagged as gay or ridiculous. Seeing men as “pretty” boys and sex objects still bother many people. I think the Mod Carousel guys are incredibly hot! We also see women in the “objectifier” position, being strong, sexy, clever, and fulfilling their sexuality. For men, it goes without thinking, but apparently women have to reaffirm it.
I love the explanation that Mod Carousel gave about their video:
It’s our opinion that most attempts to show female objectification in the media by swapping the genders serve more to ridicule the male body than to highlight the extent to which women get objectified and does everyone a disservice. We made this video specifically to show a spectrum of sexuality as well as present both women and men in a positive light, one where objectifying men is more than alright and where women can be strong and sexy without negative repercussions.
One thing the two videos have in common: the song is fucking great.
When porn actors dance to Kylie Minogue
This video is a tribute to Kylie Minogue, with actual gay porn stars from Randy Blue lip-syncing and dancing to Get Outta My Way. Ok, it’s 100% gay, so what? It’s just hot guys having fun and enjoying the music. Bodies, fun and pleasure. What else?
EDIT: 08/08/2013
I just found this awesome video of guys dancing to the Spice Girls. I’m saying it again: it’s awesome. It’s fun and completely shattering gender stereotypes.
